How Do You Check That a “4K Wallpaper” Is Actually 3840×2160?

A real 4K wallpaper is 3840 pixels wide and 2160 tall. Check Properties or Get Info before you trust a download labeled 4K.

Read the pixel dimensions. A still that is actually 4K UHD is 3840 pixels wide and 2160 pixels tall. The filename, the folder title, and the word 4K on a download button do not count. If Properties, Get Info, or identify says anything else, the file is not a 3840x2160 wallpaper.

This site's archive serves native 3840x2160 PNG files. Aggregators often do not. This page is how you catch the fake before you set it and then wonder why a 4K panel looks like 1080p.

Read the pixel size, not the filename

On Windows, right-click the file, Properties, Details. The Dimensions line is the truth. You want 3840 x 2160. 1920 x 1080 is Full HD. 2560 x 1440 is QHD. 3840 x 1600 or 3840 x 1080 is a different aspect, not UHD. 4096 x 2160 is DCI 4K, a cinema box, slightly wider than UHD.

On a Mac, select the file, File, Get Info, or press Command-I. More Info lists Dimensions. Preview, Tools, Show Inspector, says the same thing. Photos Info can lie if iCloud handed you a derivative. Prefer Get Info on the file in Finder.

On Linux, identify file.png from ImageMagick prints file.png PNG 3840x2160. file does not print pixels. ffprobe works if you already have ffmpeg. GNOME Files has Properties, Image. KDE Dolphin has Properties, Details.

Inside the image, zoom to 100%. A real 3840x2160 still is large on a 1080p screen. You should pan. If the whole picture fits on a 1920x1080 monitor at 100%, it is not 4K.

Do not trust Windows Explorer's thumbnail. Do not trust a browser tab that says 4K in the title. Do not trust a ZIP named abstract_4k_pack. Open the file that you will actually set as wallpaper.

Tools that do not lie

ImageMagick identify -verbose also reports colorspace, bit depth, and whether the file is PNG or JPEG. That catches the renamed JPEG. A file called nebula-4k.png that identify calls JPEG is a JPEG.

IrfanView, XnView, and Photopea show size in the status bar the moment the file opens. They are faster than Properties when you are walking a folder.

Windows PowerShell: (Get-Item img.png).FullName does not show pixels. Use Add-Type -AssemblyName System.Drawing and [System.Drawing.Image]::FromFile(...) if you want a script. For one file, Details is faster.

exiftool prints Image Width and Image Height. It also prints metadata someone may have stuffed with the string 3840x2160. Read the Image Width field, not a caption or a UserComment.

A hex editor is overkill. If the PNG IHDR is intact, every normal tool will read 3840x2160. If no tool can open the file, the download is truncated. Download again. Do not set a half-written PNG.

Four numbers that are not 4K UHD

Open Properties or identify. If the pair is not 3840x2160, the label on the website does not matter.

How fake-4K listings pad the number

Aggregator titles append "4K" to any wide image. A 1920x1080 JPEG upscaled with a cheap filter still ranks for 4K wallpaper. The page may even list 3840x2160 in a sidebar because the HTML is a template. The file you download is the only measurement that counts.

Some sites ship a 3840x2160 canvas with a 1920x1080 picture in the middle and a blur or a letterbox around it. Properties will say 3840x2160. Your eyes will not. Zoom to 100% on a hard edge. If the edge is mush and the file is three times softer than a native PNG from this archive, you are looking at an upscale. Native files from the archive stay sharp at 100% on line art.

Another trick is a 3840-pixel width at the wrong height, such as 3840x1600 or 3840x2400. Those are real pixels and the wrong box. They will Fill-crop on a 16:9 panel. That can be fine if you wanted that aspect. It is not UHD.

DPI or ppi in the metadata is noise. 72 ppi versus 300 ppi does not change how many pixels sit on the desktop. Ignore Print size. Ignore "26.6 x 15 inches". Read pixels.

After you confirm 3840x2160, set the still with the Windows or Mac path, and make sure the panel itself is in a 4K mode. A true 4K file on a display stuck at 1920x1080 cannot look like 4K.

If the file is the right size but the edges ring, the problem is format, not resolution. PNG versus JPEG is the next check.
